What Are Balanitis?
Balanitis is a condition marked by swelling and inflammation of the penis tip, primarily affecting the glans penis (the rounded head). It is most common in uncircumcised men and can result from various causes, including sexually transmitted infections, poor hygiene, skin conditions, and other factors. When the foreskin is also affected, the condition is called balanoposthitis.
Initially localized to the glans, balanitis can spread to nearby areas in the groin but rarely extends further, especially if treated promptly. Common symptoms include:
- Redness around the penis head
- Soreness, itching, or irritation
- Lumpy white discharge/li>
- Unpleasant or foul odor
- Difficulty retracting the foreskin
- Painful urination
- Swelling
- A shiny appearance of the glans penis
