Trichomonas

Trichomonas is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is also referred to as trichomoniasis or “trich”. Trichomoniasis is caused by a one-celled protozoan organism called Trichomonas vaginalis. Most people who have the parasite cannot tell they are infected. In women it infects both the urethra and vagina. While in men, it only infects the urethra.

Signs and Symptoms

Women

  • Vaginal discharge (white, gray, yellow, or green) with an unpleasant smell
  • Vaginal spotting/bleeding
  • Genital burning/itching
  • Genital redness or swelling
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Pain in urination and sex

Men

  • Discharge from the urethra
  • Burning during urination or after ejaculation
  • Frequent urge to urinate

Treatment Options

  • metronidazole (Flagyl)
  • tinidazole (Tindamax)
